GENETIC DRUG RESISTANT FOOD POISONING DISASTER?

During our E. coli O157:H7 adherence studies of plants grown in soil and inoculated via irrigation
water, we visually observed fluorescent bacteria moving within the vasculature of a lettuce
hypocotyl. Unfortunately, we were unable to record the movement of the bacteria on video. We
believe our observations made under controlled experimental conditions were novel and
convincing proof to us that E. coli were indeed inside the plant

Thus even with fairly sophisticated systems, as noted in the Morse & Jackson paper, antibiotic
resistance proves to be a problem in recycled/reclaimed water. Based on recent microbiology
tests here in Santa Barbara, the state’s Title 22 recycled/reclaimed water which is used for
irrigation of parks and other city areas, including golf courses, does contain multi-drug resistant
bacteria
