SEWAGE INFFLUENT AND EFFLUENTS

Sewage effluents are generated as the result of treating -- Separating the majority of solids from
-- domestic,  industrial, landfill, superfund and hospital  wastewater in a municipal sewage
treatment plant.

Generally, sewage effluent refers to the water that is released into surface water or
reclaimed
for irrigation and other uses.   The separated solids are referred to by law as sewage sludge, a
solid waste. More recently, EPA policy refers to sewage sludge as
biosolids and promotes its use
as a fertilizer and soil amendment as a cheap method of disposal rather than requiring it to be
properly disposed of in a landfill .
